FIELD
TRIP INFORMATION
Field trip curriculum supports Tennessee's Public School
Science Curriculum Standards.
To assure a quality program the maximum group size for a
program is 60 students, larger groups coming to the park
should contact the parks
department at 799-5544 X2.
There is no charge for school field trips. Reservations for
Nature Center field trips can be made for Tuesday, Wednesday
or Thursday. To make a field trip reservation, call 799-5544
X2.
Field trips are scheduled on a first come first serve basis.
TO BE A TREE (Pre-K – K)
Students will take a guided walk through an Oak Hickory forest
where they will learn how variations in size and structure
help trees to live where they live and how trees adapt to
seasonal changes.
WHO LIVES THERE? (Grades 1 and 2)
Students will learn how different environments are influenced
by living and non-living elements in an ecosystem. The energy
cycle and needs of all living things will be discussed.
ARE YOU MY MOM? (Grades 1 and 2)
A hike around Lake Van and a tour of the nature center will
help students learn that some animals resemble their parents
at birth and some do not. Some animals have predictable life
cycle that change over time and have features that help them
to survive in their environment.
SUN MUNCHING AND OTHER GOODIES (Grades 3 and 4)
Through observation and a “Sun Munching” game students will
look at how plants produce their food and pass their energy
onto animals.
WHICH NICHE? (Grades 3,4 and 5)
A hike in the woods will help students understand specific
characteristics animals need to survive in their environment.
We will look at the life cycles of some park animals.
PHOTO WHATSYNTHESIS? (Grade 4 and 5)
Through looking at the parks trees we will learn about
photosynthesis and these wonderful food and air factories.
HOME SWEET HOME (Grades 6 – 8)
Students will learn that animals that live in fields, forest,
streams and wetlands all have different requirements. We will
discuss the different attributes of these ecosystems and why
or why can’t an animal survive in each habitat.
CONNECTOR INSPECTOR (Grades 6 – 8)
Students will learn how living things are connected directly
or indirectly in ecosystems. We will use Connector Scopes and
Connector Loops to make our connections. FUN!

The City feels that the
future of our natural resources rest in the hands of our children and
education is the key.
Therefore the Parks
Department would like to work in partnership with teachers & educators to design classroom
projects that will enhance your curriculum and add to the joy of being out
of doors.
We are aware that
teachers are limited in the amount of field trips they can take so we
will bring the park to the classroom. If you would like to have a visit
from the Park Naturalist for either planning a filed trip or for a class
room activity call 799-5544.
The park has several
“goodies” that can be brought into the classroom to include:
They will excite students
about the natural world around them.
Please call
Park Naturalist Melissa Bell at (615)799-5544 and let her know how we can help you and your
students.
The Parks Department requests that all group activities be
coordinated through our park office at (615)799-5544. This will insure that
your visit will not be interfered with by other activities taking place at
the park. We want your visit to be memorable.
Curriculum is adjusted according to each students grade
level. The classes are on a first come first serve basis. There is no fee
for classes. There must be one adult for every 15 school children and
children must obey Bowie Nature Park rules.
